Most businesses in Nairobi don't have a branding problem. They have a clarity problem. Ask what makes them different and the answer takes four minutes and lands nowhere.
Brand Foundation is the work that fixes that — before a single pixel is drawn.
Why it comes first
You can design a beautiful logo for a business that hasn't decided what it stands for. Plenty of studios will sell you one. Six months later nothing has changed, because the logo was never the problem.
“A brand is not what you look like. It's the reason someone chooses you over the person quoting 20% less.”
That reason has to exist before it can be designed. Everything downstream — website, packaging, ads, how your team answers the phone — either carries one idea or dilutes it.
How we get there
- Your business first, not your logo. Where revenue comes from now, where you want it from, and what you've been pretending to be better at. Usually the most useful hour of the engagement.
- Then outward. Who your customers actually are, and what they're really choosing between. In most East African categories competitors sound identical — that's the opening, not the problem.
- Then the one idea. Not five pillars. One idea, narrow enough to be a real decision. More on that discipline in One Big Idea.
- Then we design. Name, identity, messaging, guidelines. If naming is in scope, our field guide covers how we run those sprints.
What you end up with
- A strategy you can make decisions with
- An identity that looks like your business specifically, not your category generally
- Messaging your sales team can say out loud without wincing
- Guidelines that hold when you're not in the room
And an answer to "what makes you different" that takes eight seconds, not four minutes.
Who it's for
Businesses at a real inflection point — launching, outgrowing a brand built in a hurry, entering a market where nobody knows them, or quietly losing deals to competitors who aren't better, just clearer.
Not for anyone who wants a logo by Friday. That's a real need, and there are good people who do it. We're not them.
What it looks like in practice
Andhari Suites needed a name and a position in a market where everyone was selling the same room. Gigafit Pro came to us pre-launch with a product and no idea who it was for. Ayers had the products and the distribution but looked like a company half its size.
Same first move every time: find the one true thing, build outward from it.
How we work
You talk to the people doing the work — no account manager relaying messages, no handoff halfway through. Engagements typically run four to eight weeks depending on scope.
If the foundation is solid and what you need is the brand brought to life across every touchpoint, that's Brand Content Design. If it's built and needs putting to work in market, that's Growth Marketing.
